We have just had a great few days at the house. Such a peaceful location even on a bank holiday weekend. Wonderful walks both locally and further afield. How lovely to get back after a long hike and into the lovely bath for a good soak. Everything spotless, comfy beds and beautiful views. We had an ok meal at the Newfield Inn which is walkable and a fantastic meal at the incredibly cosy Blacksmiths Arms. The bakery at Broughtin was great for picking up lunch to take on walks. All in all a great few days and Suzanne always quick to respond.
Riverside Cottage made for an idyllic Lake Distict holiday. The cottage was very clean and comfortable and provided everything needed. The communication from Suzanne & Geoff prior to arrival was extensive and meant that we were fully prepared and could find the cottage with ease. The location is stunning, with views from every window and a glorious garden at the foot of the hills. We will certainly return, thank you!
A true home-away-from home in a beautiful location with every amenity you could need. Can’t wait to go back!
A lovely relaxing three night break. It really is easy to switch off when you’re in the middle of nowhere. My favourite seat was on the settee at the back of the kitchen, looking out at the fields, sheep and hills - so peaceful. The weather was very wet, but armed with waterproofs we enjoyed walking to the Newfield Inn for a couple of drinks and could walk it at a good pace of 18 minutes. We drove to Seascape beach, which was a great expanse of beach with parking and the dog loved it. The food at the Blacksmith Arms was delicious, really cosy and quaint and worth a trip. Walking to the top of Seathwaite tarn was a great walk and glorious views. Back at the cottage, the heating worked a treat at warming us back up and drying our soggy clothes. It was lovely and clean with crisp bed linen and fluffy towels and a hot bath was definitely enjoyed. Thanks for the use of your delightful cottage - we hope to be back!
The local country pub, The Newfield Inn, within easy walking distance (1 mile by road, a little longer through fields and woodland) offers both excellent beer and an extensive menu of traditional pub fare from 9am to 9pm, including breakfast, lunch, dinner. They also stock basic groceries in their porch. Our favourite pub, the Blacksmiths Arms is a short beautifully scenic drive (or 6 mile circular walk) over the fell to Broughton Mills, well worth the effort.
For greater choice, just 6 miles away, is the unspoilt village of Broughton in Furness. Home to a cobbled square surrounded by Georgian coloured houses, it provides all the essentials with a deli, butchers, grocers, bakery, post office and petrol station as well as a café and 3 more traditional Lakeland pubs.
Riverside Cottage is a perfect location for exploring the delights of Cumbria. Situated between Coniston and Eskdale, the Duddon Valley will delight walkers, cyclists, nature lovers and those who enjoy the peace and beauty of the countryside.
Walk leaflets in the cottage detail at least 9 walks from the door of varying lengths in addition to others within the Duddon Valley, including Harter Fell, Seathwaite Tarn, Caw Fell and Dow Crag. Many of the walks from the door start with a beautiful walk alongside the River Duddon, including the one to the pub!
The cottage also lies on the Lakes and Dales cycle route and there is space to store cycles in the cottage and the courtyard. Cycles can be hired from High Hurst, just a mile away, both electric and non electric. Wild swimmers will be spoilt for choice along the River Duddon whilst children can paddle in the river at Ulpha 'Beach', just a mile from the cottage.
A short drive over the beautiful or bleak (depending on the weather!) Birker Fell will bring you into Eskdale for more stunning walks, including Scafell from Wasdale Head and Stanley Ghyll waterfall. For more restful experiences, board the Eskdale and Ravenglass steam train to travel the spectacular 7 mile journey to Ravenglass on the coast, or head to Muncaster Castle to visit its idyllic gardens and house. Afterwards, stop off at Santon Bridge Tearooms or the Crosby Cake Cupboard to enjoy tea and cake or at one of the 5 traditional pubs in the Eskdale Valley for more hearty fare.
An equally beautiful drive over Stickle Pike towards Broughton Mills and Torver, brings you to our nearest Lake - Coniston Water. Coniston village boasts local shops, pubs, cafes and museums and of course a choice of watersports and boats from which to enjoy the Lake, including the National Trust Steam Gondola. Brantwood, home of John Ruskin, boasts stunning gardens as well his historic house, with a cafe housed in the old stables, with a beautiful view over the Lake towards the Old Man of Coniston.
To drive into the heart of the National Park follow the breathtaking Wyrnose Pass into the Langdale Valley and on to Ambleside and Grasmere. In the Langdale Valley you will find the beautiful Loughrigg Tarn, more stunning walks and of course those spectacular views of the Langdale Pikes. Driving onwards you will find the towns of Ambleside and Winderemere with all the tourist trappings of these very popular honeypots.
Covered parking for 1 car is provided in the cart shed, just outside the front door, further parking is available just around the corner at the bridge.
Our perfect rural location does mean that there is no public transport within the valley, therefore we do consider that a car is essential

Having spent my childhood holidays in the Duddon Valley, I fell in love with its tranquility and stunning scenery. My husband and I have now been lucky enough to realise our dream of owning a holiday cottage in the valley. Having recently retired, we are able to visit more often to enjoy our holiday home and the beautiful surroundings but at other times we take great pleasure in having guests spend their holidays in our cottage and that of next door.
