Enjoy the views of the castle and the range of characterful traditional buildings to front and rear, and settle in for the evening! Leave your car parked on the cobbles for a day or two and explore our historic village with its cobbled alleyways, traditional pubs, antique shops and, of course, the many racing stables for which Middleham is famed. The mediaeval castle is not to be missed; it has the remains of the largest keep in northern England and was the childhood home of Richard III. Take an early morning walk to see the horses at the gallops on Middleham Low Moor, followed by breakfast (perhaps al fresco at the cottage, or at one of the eateries in the village) – what a start to the day! Follow up with a hearty lunch or supper at one of Middleham's four traditional pubs, or perhaps opt for one of several fine restaurants located in the village and the local area. If you wish to explore a little further afield after the delights of Middleham, try the water falls of Aysgarth Falls or England's highest uninterrupted fall at Hardraw Force. Visit the spectacular White Scar Caves near Ingleton and the renowned Malham Cove and Gordale Scar, all fine examples of the landforms which characterise this region's limestone scenery.
The magnificent medieval castle of Castle Bolton (where Mary, Queen of Scots was once imprisoned) is a must-see, while there are many National Trust and Historic Houses properties within a short drive, such as Fountains Abbey and Newby Hall. Perhaps less well known, but no less delightful, are the gardens, arboretum and bird of prey centre at Thorp Perrow. For the bird watching enthusiast there is the wetland reserve at Nosterfield or, for something completely different, spend a few hours at the Forbidden Corner – a strange and wonderful place full of surprises!
Local towns of note include Leyburn with its bustling market square, its range of independent retailers and eateries, and the splendid views of Wensleydale from Leyburn Shawl; Masham with its beautiful spired church and two breweries with visitor centres (Black Sheep and Theakston); and Richmond with its fine castle and military museum, its gorge and waterfalls and the unique Georgian theatre. The old station buildings in Richmond are home to a three screen cinema, an art gallery, restaurant and artisan producers of food and drink.
Take the beautiful drive updale to Hawes to visit the Wensleydale Creamery (home of Wensleydale cheese and all things dairy) with its own tasting room. Before returning, take a small detour via the beautiful lake of Semerwater, or opt to return via Buttertubs Pass and Swaledale, absorbing the fine, sweeping view as you descend into the upper dale.
Grassington (location of the new “All Creatures Great and Small” series), the canals of Skipton, and the small cathedral city of Ripon are all within easy reach. Each one is good for a memorable day out.
Finally, for horse racing enthusiasts, there are regular races at Catterick, Thirsk and Ripon.
