Unwind and be inspired in our cosy, rustic, restored barn, nestled in a gorgeous valley on the edge of a small village in the North Pennines AONB, 35 mins from M6 over the very scenic Hartside Pass. We've lovingly decorated this unique space with a palette of hand mixed colours and incorporated lots of wonderful, quirky features. With outstanding walking right on your doorstep, and an abundance of nature to enjoy, it's the perfect base from which to explore this remote, wild part of Cumbria. We hope you'll enjoy staying in our big, beautiful barn as much as we've enjoyed letting our imaginations rip restoring it! Our beautifully lit, colour drenched, spacious self contained barn next to our cottage is full of cosy features and all the character you'd expect from a building that's 150 years old. It is such a great space for unwinding and thinking freely, so perfectly suited to people who are looking for something unique and a bit different. You'll be inspired by the tranquil scenery right on your doorstep and enjoy the peace and quiet. In summer you can open the barn balcony doors and soak up the outside ambience such as the gentle, relaxing trickle of the nearby stream/waterfall or the incredible range of birdsong. The balcony is a good vantage point to spy a dashing red squirrel or two, who often scamper across the courtyard. A feast of warm hand mixed colours greets you when you first enter the barn, where to the right you'll find a cosy, colourful kitchen cobbled together with lots of natural wood and re-cycled furniture. The frame for the kitchen sink was constructed from our daughters chunky climbing frame. The cupboard with the orange formica top was our old sideboard in the cottage opposite for many years. It's been re-vamped to house all your essential kitchen gear, including a good wok for a tasty stir fry. The bathroom is also on the ground floor and is fitted with a powerful rain shower over a large double-ended steel bath. The funky colour changing LED lights provide the perfect atmosphere for a relaxing, romantic soak. The first floor is a lovely big open-plan, living space, with comfortable, cosy seating around the wood burning stove and a dining area at the other end. It's the perfect place to make a fire, close the shutters and chill out after a day exploring the stunning surroundings. There is a good bluetooth hi-fi, so remember to load some fave sounds on your phone to enjoy, as the barn makes a perfect listening room (we use it to assess our music) and has great acoustics and thick walls so if you fancy, you're welcome to pump up the volume. Or why not take advantage of the projector that you can hire to project films on to the gable end wall for a fab cinema experience. The master bedroom on the cosy loft mezzanine level has a very comfy king-size bed from where you can gaze up at the night sky or watch the white clouds float past on a summer sky. For a complete immersive artists self contained studio/ barn experience, there is a room downstairs which we're in the process of developing into an art room complete with big wall drawing board etc. There's still loads of DIY to complete on the cottage across the shared courtyard, but we're still determined to realise our long-term dream of turning it into a multi-discipline creative retreat.
Gillians barn was beautiful! completely hidden away from all hustle and bustle of city life. Inside the barn was a colourful, homely well equipped home that was exceptional. Everything was clean, and comfortable. Gillian communicated often to ensure our stay was enjoyed. I would definitely go back and recommend this hidden gem to anyone looking for some peace and quiet.
If you are looking for a quirky, quiet, out of the way place then this may well suit you. We were walking the Pennine Way and used it as a base for two days. The barn conversion has the feel of something rustic in the French countryside with lots of painted wood and natural bannister posts made from trees. There is an array of coloured lights (with a remote to select the colours you want) as well as some strips of led’s. The kitchen is amply stocked with equipment, the shower excellent and the mezzanine bed most comfortable. Heating works well but is controlled remotely by the host; we liaised with them as to what times we wanted and it was never an issue. I would happily return to this little place though, possibly, not best for light sleepers as the wooden staircases are a little noisy when using. Thanks Gillian and Simon for a lovely stay. All the best, Lyndon
We absolutely loved the barn! It was even better than the photos and had so much character and charm. Really comfy bed and cosy log burner in a huge living area. Surroundings are stunning and the barn is the perfect base for exploring the pennines, lake district and yorkshire. Gillian was a very helpful and responsive host and went above and beyond to give us the best experience. We'd love to come back!
Quirky , full of character and colours , Gillian and Simon’s beautifully renovated barn was the perfect place for a relaxing break . We enjoyed the space and all that came with it - the projector and films , funky lighting, log burner , sound system, books , big bath and the sound of the waterfall in particular. A red squirrel 🐿️ sighting would have topped it off ! We enjoyed chatting to the hosts who gave us good recommendations on local walks in and around the area . Garrigil is a very quiet village set in beautiful surroundings. We’d love to go back one day .
Honestly we cannot recommend this place enough and wish we could have stayed longer than 2 days. Gillian and Simon were there to meet us and made us feel instantly at home. The accommodation looks exactly like the pictures and is the perfect place to relax. From the beautiful decor to the waterfall right next to the house which was perfect to listen to while falling asleep. When the skies are a bit clearer, there are so many places to wander around and walking trails for all abilities. If the Cumbrian weather is traditionally unpredictable, then the projector is just the thing to wrap up and watch films to over a drink or two. We’ve already recommended this place to absolutely everyone we know and we can’t wait to book to go back.
The barn is nestled in a small hamlet set in the South Tyne valley, four miles from Alston, the highest market town in England. Set in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it's a perfect spot for walking, unwinding and immersing in nature.
Please look at the photos to see what there is to explore right from the door. It's most suited to people who come to be inspired by the raw, magical natural environment in this special place in Cumbria.
There are endless possibilities for moor and woody round walks through some stunning countryside. A scenic footpath meanders from the garden all the way to Ashgill Force, an awe inspiring waterfall that you can walk behind and then have a wild swim, if you like :)
The Pennine Way up to Cross Fell starts from the far end of the village. Near the top you'll come to Old Greg's Hut, a sweet bothy to rest your weary legs in front of the fire and gaze at the stars.
Just 1 min. walk away, towards the Pennine Way walk there is a very handy, friendly local shop/ P. Office, which has lots of essentials.
Alston ( 8 mins by car) has two small but fairly well-stocked supermarkets (Co-op and Spar), several cozy pubs, cafes and a restaurant.. Larger supermarkets are found in both Penrith (award winning fish and chips) and Hexham, both roughly 20 miles away. For longer stays Sainsbury's deliver on-line orders, in all weathers!
Please note the pub here is closed for refurbishment so the only nightlife is the awesome night skies, full moon wanders and plenty of owl hoots and squarks!
Perfect for cyclists, the C2C route runs through the village and passes the barn. We have a secure storage room for bikes, within the barn.
Car/ campervan parking is fine in the front drive, in front of the line of shells.
Please note the width of the front driveway means it's unsuitable for SUV's or motorhomes.
If you're coming by public transport and need a lift from Alston we can offer this.
