We have stayed here twice now, and we will certainly come back. Our favorite place to stay in Ashland, by far. Peaceful, beautiful, with a high spiritual vibration. My family and I love it.
Benjamin's place was exactly as described. The home is charming and the property is beautiful. I particularly enjoyed sitting out on the patio enjoying the charming view of the pond, the mountains, and all the wildlife. It was very peaceful. I only wish I had read the list of amenities better so I wasn't surprised when I got there and realized there is no air conditioning, but that's not the host's fault. I would definitely stay here again, just not at the hottest time of the year.
The Colestin Valley is close to Ashland with all its culture and amenities but maintains a very rural character. The Monastery, Tashi choling , is the energetic center of the community . While most of the land is private in the valley, there are plenty of places to go for hikes and to explore the wilderness that surrounds the valley. It abuts the largest wilderness area in the continental United States. The Mt. Ashland Ski Resort is just 12 miles away. Access is by way of the Colestin Road, a well maintained winding dirt road connecting to I-5 to the south and Ashland Ski Road to the north-west, about 8 miles from either side
The property is rural and the roads are well maintained dirt. In the winter it's 'sadvisable to have 4wheel-drive and once in a while we can get snowed in for 24 hours. Mountain bikes are great to explore the mountain trails around if you have one. The monastery is an easy walk and post-Covid is open to the public.
Traditionally they have an open meditation on Sunday mornings. Mount Ashland is about 15-20 minutes away by car and provides loads of wild flowers and glorious views of the Colestine Valley and Shasta to the south and the whole Rogue valley to the north. There are miles and miles of trails to hike and camp on starting behind the base of Mt Ashland Ski Resort. The town of Ashland is 30 minutes away and full of interesting restaurants, clubs, museums and a park that was designed by the same guy who made Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. The closest restaurant is called Callahan's (about 15 min) at the freeway entrance, which serves good Italian food and Sunday brunch.
