We never met Khamis as he was at a wedding followed by a family emergency. If fact we didn’t meet any one. We were the only guests and there is not much around here unless you are linked up to the adjacent diving school. We ate twice at the accommodation and twice at Pemba Sunset a short walk south down the coast and past the 4 dogs that run loose there. Salim from the restaurant kindly escorted us back after dinner. Verani Beach Lodge is on the coast and looks out over an extensive area of seaweed cultivation. It is not really suitable for swimming. Luckily after 2 days we were told about the lovely beach 15 minutes down the coast. If you truly want to get away from it all, then this might be for you. Remember, to book all meals in advance, otherwise you might go hungry.

This aibnb is located in an amazing location, next to an almost wild beach. Kashim is very nice and communicative, so is the personnel of the lodge. Rooms and breakfast are basic, but the place - just next to the beach - is wonderful. If you decide to come here, make sure you bring provisions, since they only sell water and, if you arrive late in the evening there is no food (unless you order in advance). We didn't eat at Kashim, but we can recommend Kitchen Restaurant in the village or Pemba Sunset on the beach (here again, you have to call in advance). Be aware that this is not a place for everybody, since you don't have internet and sometimes no mobile signal. But you will definitely fall in love with the place, despite many improvements that can be made to the quality of accommodation and breakfast.

If you travel to Pemba on a budget, Varani is an option for you since there are not to many accommodation places there. Khamis's Airbnb is one of the few with a budget friendly price range. Even thow the room is basic and running on solar energy (electricity is a problem on the island) at least you have a private bathroom, clean towels and bed sheets and a spectacular view to the Indian Ocean since the property is right on the beach. You will also get complimentary breakfast and ground coffee (which is a rare found in the archipelago) and Khamis and Iohana (his help) were very nice and adapt theirs breakfast to my dietary requests. The beach in front is quiet and wild and the water is crystal clear. Since the property is running on solar, there is a special place on the property to charge your phone. Also be mindful with the water consumption since they bring water from town, in canisters, to fill up your bathroom tank. In conclusion Pemba is a place you come to admire the landscapes, to enjoy the quietness and the nature. For this reasons I recommend Khamis's place to all budget travelers.
