We had a great stay at Keepers Cottage & really didn’t want to leave! Travelled with a 10.5 month old puppy, who had the best time on the property - played in the river, admired the wildlife, loved frolicking outside the house. Fantastic, comfortable cottage - we brought a starlink and were able to work remotely for the week. The woods on the property are wonderful - saw deer, pheasants, etc. The local horses are super curious and the sheep somewhat more sceptical :) The closest neighbour cautioned of nesting water fowl (keep your dog on a lead). The cottage is in a wilderness area, so it’s really lovely. If you’ve got a big dog though (my lab puppy is already more than 35kg), not sure how you’re meant to get over the gates to pick up the nearby trails; they’re meshed at the bottom & barbed near the top. Probably not an issue with lighter/smaller dogs. Fantastic stay at Keepers & hope we’ll be able to revisit!
It's a great place to stay, peaceful, secluded, deer's, badger's ,foxes and the odd red squirrel a lovely place to chill and relax.
We stayed here for a bank holiday weekend in may with two adults and our spaniel. The location is difficult to beat: deep in the woods and very private. Very much in nature. We had planned to go walking but the house is so wonderful we spent a lot of time sitting outside reading and listening to the birds. Our spaniel surprised a young deer just outside the kitchen door. We did explore the Solway coast villages and found great beaches in Bowness on Solway and Allonby for the dog to run free. Almost by chance we found fresh fish off the boat in Maryport (there are two boats, Charisma and Chelaris and both publish their arrival times on fb) So we had the best langoustines and red mullet ever. This was a lovely stay - we wanted to get away from it all and you could not find a better place for that.
A Peaceful & Quiet large family house with only cows, sheep, horses wildlife and farm only the occasional distant walker to disturb the peace. No neighbours and very private with woodlands and local walks to explore. Close to Penrith Carlisle Eden Valley and the Lake District as well as Hadrians wall the house forms the perfect base for visiting lots of different attractions and scenery and major events.

'You have to get on the beaten track to get off the beaten track'

Hi, We ran Keepers as a holiday cottage between 2007 and 2011 and then we let the house to local families for several years. In 2020 we decided to return to the holiday cottage business as we have less family commitments and more time to run the business. What a year we chose to try to restart the business!! I prefer to run the cottage as a holiday place because that way we get to share it with many more people. Originally my family home, we bought the cottage 50 years ago back when the area was a quiet backwater. When my father died the house and woods were left to the family and in order to keep the wildlife haven that we had created I started to let it out as a holiday cottage. My father had a very ethical and green ethos and I have inherited that too! Once you have visited I think you will catch the magic that countless guests and visitors have enjoyed over the years. My husband (Simon) and I live in Kendal with our 2 sons. I have mostly been a stay at home mum but I am involved in several voluntary roles involving mental health and special needs. I am a trained biologist and teacher with a keen interest in trees and horticulture. In my spare time I like to garden and walk the fells and when its warm enough go wild swimming. Hope that's enough info ;)
