The Park of Ile St Germain
- The lavender garden
The lavender garden has a southern accent: it welcomes all sorts of Mediterranean plants that prefer dry environments, such as lavender, sage and savory.
- The unexpected gardens
A stroll through the unexpected gardens smells like a vacation in the country: only the birds' song disturbs the ambient calm. Bicycles, playgrounds or picnic areas, as well as canine companions are kept away from this sensitive space in order to preserve its tranquility. Everything passes, everything changes, and the species evolve freely with the seasons and over the years. Frogs, newts and mallards share the ponds of these gardens, while bees peacefully fly over the place and make incessant trips to their hives.
The belvedere offers the best view on this part of the site. From the top of this small natural promontory, one can observe and admire the unexpected gardens in their entirety. Below, a bench invites you to rest and contemplate.
- The walled gardens
The walled gardens form the transition between the unplanned gardens and the park. Four awnings protect the entrance to the site. Similar to the passageway of a monastery, a shaded pathway runs along the sides of this rectangular garden and connects different patios.
The horticultural plants are mixed in a realization that seeks harmonies of form, color, volume and height.
- The garden of messicoles
The garden of the messicoles invites to discover wild plants a little bit particular. Botanists scientifically call them messicolous plants, that is to say "that accompany the harvest". Agronomists professionally call them "crop weeds". Bohemian souls poetically call them "field flowers".
Modern agricultural practices threaten this flora of great diversity. In this garden, it is protected and valued: the walker will be able to rediscover the Nielle des blés, the chrysanthemum of the harvests, the poppy, and many other species.
- The former garden
The former garden recalls the history of the site: in the 6th century, the island was the property of the Saint-Germain-des-Prés abbey. At that time, it was traditional for the monks to cultivate vegetable gardens and plant fig trees in each of them. The former garden is now a fruit garden.
- The garden of discoveries
This garden, composed of an ecological pond (visiomare) and an organic vegetable garden, allows children and adults to learn, or simply to review the names of plants and animals while having fun. It is designed as a small labyrinth in the shape of a snail shell. All along the path, labels are placed like riddles.
French Playing Card Museum
The collection of the Musée Français de la Carte à Jouer was initiated in 1930 by an exceptional donation to the city of Issy-les-Moulineaux. More than 11,000 sets from all over the world are now preserved.
France and its "regional portraits" of the Ancien Régime, the ups and downs of the Revolution, the birth of our current "French portrait".
Europe with its multiple German, Italian and Spanish "portraits"...
Asia (China, India and Japan) reveals original playing cards in their forms and contents.
The manufacture and regulation of card games, the world of the player, the game scenes.
Fantasy cards, suitable for daydreaming, laughter, or discovery...
