We are situated on the quiet B7068 equidistant between the Historic Market town of Lockerbie and The ‘Muckle Toon’ of Langholm.
Langholm
The town of Langholm and its surrounding offer many activities and boasts lots of breathtaking scenery hence the reason why outside pursuits such as walking, fishing, golfing and cycling are among the most popular activities for visitors.
Langholm Common Riding began in 1759 and the traditions carried out by Bauldy Beattie and the fathers of the Common Riding continue with as much determination in the modern day. Tradition is the backbone of the Common Riding. The morning’s events are carried out unchanged and epitomise the community’s love for their town and its beautiful surroundings. Horse Racing, Athletic games, Cumberland wrestling, and Highland Dancing fill the afternoon on the Castleholm with a display of colour, atmosphere, and conviviality that is unrivalled. The closing ceremonies in the evening, when the streets are filled wall to wall, are a sight to behold and a fitting end to the most important day in the Langholm calendar. One of Scotland’s great salmon rivers, the River Esk, flows through Langholm and permits are available for game fishing on the Esk. The area also provides excellent walking opportunities with waymarked routes through the surrounding hills.
Gilnockie Tower

Just 12 miles from our property is Gilnockie Tower or Hollows Tower, one of the finest examples of a 16th Century Scots Tower house or “pele tower” in the area. It was the Strong hold of the Clan Armstrong. It stands in what was known as the Debatable Lands – so called because no-one knew if they belonged to Scotland or England. Here you can immerse yourself in the life and times of the Border Reiver days and gain a deeper understanding of Scotland’s rich historical legacy.
Gilnockie Tower, an impressive 16th-century Scottish pele tower, is a sight to behold. This tower served as the residence of Johnnie Armstrong of Gilnockie, a notorious Border Reiver, around 500 years ago. In 1530 the Scottish king ordered the hanging of this powerful chieftain and his story was later romanticised by Sir Walter Scott.
This stunning tower features five floors including a vaulted chamber, a banqueting hall and a spiral staircase. The entrance stone which is believed to be as old as two thousand years is a remarkable piece of history. Although it was once a roofless ruin, the tower has undergone a complete renovation and is now open to visitors as a clan and tourist attraction.
The Clan Armstrong Centre which is located on the premises contains reiving artefacts and the world's largest collection of Armstrong archives. Historians, students and tourists alike have recognised the tower as either Gilnockie Tower or Johnnie Armstrong's Tower. It is believed to have been constructed during the period circa 1490-1524 in a rubble built, carved stone, Medieval Period Scots Tower House style.

Hermitage Castle , Newcastleton
Hermitage, in deepest Liddesdale, is a lonely spot and the sight of the awesome castle ruin only heightens the sense of foreboding. Hermitage Castle has inspired local legends but its history of torture, treason and romantic trysts is more than colourful enough.
For most of its 400-year life, the castle was the key to controlling the Scottish Middle March. In his book, The Steel Bonnets, George Macdonald Fraser describes Hermitage as “the guardhouse of the bloodiest valley in Britain”.
Known as ‘the strength of Liddesdale’, Hermitage was fought over time and again. Even the building of the castle in the 13th century brought Scotland and England to the brink of war.
Samye Ling Tibetan Monastery

Samye Ling grounds and main temple are open for day visitors all year round and entry is free of charge.
During the winter months, the Tibetan Tea Rooms may be closed, however visitors are welcome to make themselves a cup of tea in Johnstone House. If you're visiting with a large group, let the centre know so they can make arrangements for you.
The Samye Ling shop has reduced hours in winter but if it's closed when you visit, just let reception know and they will open it for you where possible between 9am and 4pm.
Allandale Distillery, Annan
Why not enjoy a wee dram at Annandale Distillery that was established in 1836 and reborn in 2014 following an extensive £10.5million restoration project. Once again single malt Scotch whisky is being produced in the region after a almost 100 year sleep.
Cycling

We are 22 Miles from Ae Forest & 23 Miles from Newcastleton ideally positioned to explore both forests. The 7stanes are world-class mountain biking centres that span the south of Scotland. Their award-winning trails offer some of the best mountain biking in the country and attract riders from across the UK and beyond.
You don’t have to be an experienced mountain biker to enjoy these famous trails: there are a wide range of routes to suit beginners, families and experts. Read more here
Walking
As well as the two forests above that also include a plethora of walks there are numerous walks in the hills surrounding Langholm. Slightly further afield is The Grey Mares Tail waterfall which is about an hour away Nr Moffat. There is a stunning walk past the waterfall to the Loch above.

Close by there are some great safe swimming spots in local rivers and lochs that we can advise upon.
