Sadly, I had to leave the property after 4.5 hours because it was too cold and the underfloor heating system wasn't improving the temperature at all. With the assistance of Airbnb I was able to recover everything I had paid. Kirkwall isn't warm during the autumn and winter (it's 11°C here now) and, with the warmest room at 18°C and the coldest at 16°C, and with no improvement at all during the time I was there, I arranged alternative accommodation at short notice. The owners did reply to my messages offering portable heating, but after I had left. Other than the issue with the heating, the property is very smart and well-appointed.

A lovely spacious apartment with excellent facilities. Comfortable and spotlessly clean. Very central and an ideal base.
