Dyke Cottage, adjacent to a working farm, enjoys panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and is perfectly situated to explore the striking Lake District, Hadrian's Wall, the beautiful Eden Valley, the Scottish Borders and unspoilt Cumbria and Northumbria. The Pennine Way literally skirts the garden walls, making it the perfect place to get away from it all. The Cottage also includes 2 x fishing rods with Prince Albert Fishing Association and is located close to the C2C cycling route. The Cottage has an enclosed private garden.
The cottage was a lovely place to stay, clean and comfortable. Thank you for the treats left out for us. Alston was a walk or train ride ( on the little steam train ) away and had some interesting shops. Walking to Epiacum roman fort ( also known as Whitley Castle ) was easy- 3 fields away- using the Pennine Way. Just sitting in the garden, I saw about 15 different types of birds, including a pair of Redstarts, curlews in abundance. The garden was a tranquil place to sit out in. Very peaceful place to sleep- no noise ( other than the sheep! ). Well-equipped kitchen.
If you want a city break, forget it - this is the complete opposite! Wild, panoramic views with curlews calling every few minutes. Private, lovely enclosed garden - very warm inside and incredibly well equipped house. It was quite muddy - but everywhere is muddy right now!! Really wonderful getaway in a superbly positioned place. Loved it!!
Suzanne is a wonderful host and we found her home great to relax in, especially with a dog. She went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable and even provided helpful travel updates to help us through adverse weather. We had extremely wet and stormy weather for most of our stay so everywhere was really muddy, but the surrounding area and local towns were really lovely and we had great walks and visited some superb restaurants The driveway is a bit tricky to negotiate in reverse when it's dark ...and muddy....but given the weather conditions it was to be expected The house has everything you might need, especially considering we were there for Christmas and New year. A really cosy and comfy house in a stunning location
We had a wonderful time. The house was comfortable and warm and ideal for a family of mixed generations including toddlers. There were great walks from the house with beautiful surroundings and interesting places to visit for days out. Northumberland in the autumn was absolutely stunning and everyone was so kind and friendly. Suzanne was easily contactable and very helpful.
Would highly recommend as a get-away-from-it-all break. Lovely cottage next to a farm. Beautiful views from the garden. Can walk from house to Alston next to the South Tynedale Railway. Alston itself is a bit limited (eg takeaways closed when we were there), but the Spar is excellent and we explored in all directions, ie Lake District, Durham, Hexham, Hadrian’s Wall. Highly recommend! Thank you Suzanne.
The pretty town of Alston is just 3 miles away. As the backdrop to the Oliver film, you will find quaint cobbled streets, a market cross, an array of shops, inns, restaurants and an art and craft gallery. As the highest market town in England; Alston also provides the terminus for the narrow-gauge South Tyne Railway.
There are plenty of great walking routes, including the Pennine Way skirting the garden walls. The C2C Cycling route close by and the A686 that takes you to the Lake District hailed as one of the top ten scenic routes in Europe.
