Our recent visit to Karl and Margaret’s Farm was delightful! Upon arrival, we were greeted with delicious goat milk, cheese, and eggs. It was a treat to taste such high-quality goods straight from the source. The farm's charming animals, included goats, chickens, pigs, miniature horses and even a sheep (who’s technically an honorary goat). Also, there were three new baby goats that we absolutely adored. We also had the pleasure of feeding them. The goat hike led by Karl was both enjoyable and educational, offering a chance for the kids to disconnect from technology and connect with nature. At the end of the hike we were met with some delicious cookies that were freshly baked by Margaret. The kids absolutely loved them, as well as the adults! The beauty of the land surpassed our expectations. This home truly felt like a home away from home. Overall, a wonderful experience that I highly recommend for nature lovers and those seeking a peaceful retreat. We'll definitely be back!
We really enjoyed our stay here. Karl and Margaret were great hosts. They were very friendly and helpful. The house was very nice and filled with so many interesting things. The outside was very peaceful. My dogs and I loved walking around the property. We loved meeting the goats, and our whole stay was very relaxing.
It was a fantastic stay with a big family (and a dog). Karl and Margaret are very supportive.
My friend and I needed a quiet place to get some writing done, and Karl & Margaret's was the perfect spot! The farm was easy to access from the house, even with ice on the ground! Groceries and a quick bite were a short drive away (although we had eggs, milk, cheese, and yogurt waiting for us from the farm...all delicious!) and my friend even walked back from the grocery a couple of times for some scenic exercise. Of course, the goats were the best part! And the sheep and pigs and chickens and dog. Karl was a great instructor when it came to milking the goats, and the goats didn't blink an eye at our inexperience. We will definitely list Ten Apple Farm as a repeat for the future! Highly recommended!
Wonderful place. Karl and Margaret are the nicest people. They were kind and accommodating and just all around caring people. Loved the treats and meeting the animals, too. Will definitely stay there again next time we’re in Portland!

Margaret Hathaway lives with her family on Ten Apple Farm, a homestead in southern Maine, where they raise dairy goats and poultry, tend a large garden and small orchard, make cheese, and give occasional workshops on basic homesteading skills. She is the author of The Year of the Goat, a memoir which chronicles her journey with husband Karl Schatz from New York City, where she was a manager of the Magnolia Bakery, to their home on the farm. The couple lives with their three daughters, Charlotte, Beatrice and Sadie; their dog, Godfrey; cat, truffle; rabbit, JT; and an ever growing group of animals. She is also the author of Living With Goats, The Food Lovers Guide to Maine, and Portland Maine Chef's Table Cookbook. Karl Schatz is the Director of Aurora Photos, an international stock photography agency based in Portland, Maine. He is a small-scale farmer and sustainable agriculture advocate. His photographic exhibit, American Goat, documents the goat industry in America and has educated thousands about the wonderful and diverse world of goats. He is President of the Board of Levey Day School, Portland's Community Jewish Day School where their daughters attend, and leader of Portland’s Slow Food Convivium.
